The tomb was discovered in 1944 dating from the Hellenistic period around the end of the 4th century BC,  is located near Seutopolis, the capital city of Thracian king Seutes III. It is part of a large Thracian necropolis.

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is a unique aesthetic and artistic masterpiece, showcasing the creative spirit of the Thracians. This monument stands alone in the world, unparalleled in its beauty. The exceptionally well-preserved frescoes and the original structure reveal the remarkable evolution and high level of culture and pictorial art in Hellenistic Thrace.

As one of the most significant monuments of Thracian culture in Bulgaria, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979.
